Modesto was built along the the Tuolumne River and founded in 1870 by William C. Ralston. In 1903, agriculture was introduced to this area, and has had a heavy influence over it ever since. The American Graffiti Festival is one of Modesto's largest events. The city shuts down streets downtown and classic cars parade the streets. This event has a huge history in Modesto, the film "American Graffiti" was set in this town since the director, George Lucas, was born and raised here.
Modesto is also home of Earnest and Julio Gallo, the owners of the largest winery in the world. Modesto is the county seat and largest city of Stanislaus County, California, United States. With a population of approximately 201,165 at the 2010 census, it is the 18th largest city in the state of California and forms part of the Modesto-Merced combined Statistical Area.
